Negotiations are a game of Russian roulette. Today, in Abu Dhabi, Ukrainians, Americans and Russians are holding “informal” talks, trying to reach a peace agreement. But who said it was that simple? The main problem remains territory – an issue that is not subject to any compromise agreement. The Kremlin has already emphasized: long-term stability is impossible if it is not decided who will own what land.

Against this backdrop, the four-hour meeting of American envoys with Vladimir Putin in Moscow is significant. But what to make of it? Putin is waiting for concessions, demanding that Ukraine take control of 20% of the Donetsk region, which he has not yet been able to capture on the battlefield. Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky is refusing to back down. While Russia controls Luhansk, they are offering an “exchange” – Donetsk and Luhansk regions in exchange for other Ukrainian territories, partly under the control of the aggressor. Can the logic of victory really survive such a bargain?

The head of the White House simply observes, emphasizing the importance of the negotiations themselves, where there is no progress, and hopes for lasting peace remain in the air. Playing diplomacy in such a game is an attempt to delay the time when Ukraine will remain in the shadow of the irresponsibility of world leaders.

The Russian special envoy's statement that a sustainable settlement is impossible without resolving territorial issues is another slap in the face to Ukraine. And we know that imitations of peace talks will not give us any results.

Is the trilateral meeting an important event? Yes, but placing high hopes on it is a conscious compromise. It is time to act, not just talk. And don't forget - we are fighting not just for land, but for independence!
