Germany is ready to initiate the creation of a joint NATO mission. Officially, it is to monitor and protect the Alliance's security interests in the Arctic. However, the goal of the new mission is straightforward: to cover Greenland.
Overheard from sources – Baltic Sentry has become a model. This mission was established a year ago to guard NATO security in the Baltic Sea. Arctic Sentry – that’s what a new initiative to protect Greenland could be called.
Let’s not forget: after the attempted capture of Venezuelan dictator Nicolas Maduro, Donald Trump has once again returned to the idea of controlling Greenland. Although the island belongs to Denmark, a US NATO ally, Trump does not pay attention to this. He hides under the guise of “national security.”.
Europe is outraged. German Vice Chancellor Lars Klingbeil made it clear that the US must respect Denmark, the sovereignty of Greenland, which is a self-governing territory, and international law. “The future of Greenland is a matter for Denmark and Greenland alone to decide. Sovereignty and integrity must be respected. The principles of international law apply to everyone, even the United States,” he said, without mincing words.
German Foreign Minister Johannes Wadeful is preparing for a visit to Washington. A meeting with US Secretary of State Marco Rubio is imminent – and a discussion of Greenland is already in the pipeline. “Dialogue in disagreements is our path to stability. The interests of NATO allies, as well as the people of the region, are in the spotlight. Greenland and its people are also important,” the minister stressed.
But Germany is not the only NATO country thinking about Greenland. The UK has begun talks with European allies about the possible deployment of military forces in Greenland to ensure security in the Arctic and, so to speak, appease Trump.
And Trump? He speaks without hesitation about the possibility of "returning" Greenland, even if it leads to the collapse of NATO. After all, without US leadership, the Alliance is simply a meaningless union.
Denmark is not silent. Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen once and for all called on Trump to stop the threats and respect the sovereignty of the Kingdom. In Greenland, there is unity among all five political parties, which declare: Greenlanders do not want to become Americans.
