ZMINA reports this. The lawyer of the Handziuk family, Anna Kalinchuk, clearly states: the defense is manipulating the process, aiming to exhaust the terms of criminal liability. They are trying to start the case in order to argue in the European Court that the trial is taking too long, emphasizing the violation of Article 6 of the Convention. This is nothing more than a shameless attempt to overturn the verdict due to the expiration of the terms.
Kalinchuk emphasizes that the Kyiv Court of Appeal has already held its 26th session in the case, where evidence was considered. One of the key moments of the session was the search of Levin's house, during which a party card was found, confirming his connection with BYuT. But the defense lawyers claim that this card was planted. This is a clear absurdity. How can other circumstances of the case be canceled on the basis of such a baseless theory?
The investigation of the case is ongoing, and the status of Munger and Levin remains uncertain. They are protected by the presumption of innocence, since the verdict has not entered into force. According to Kalinchuk, the court, in deciding to re-examine the evidence, showed excessive loyalty to the defense attorneys, which only delays the process. The more evidence, the longer the appeal proceedings take. And the result is that the court is now considering the case much longer than it was in the first instance.
The notorious court clock is counting down to 2028, so that the Munger and Levin case does not drag on for decades.
What actually happened in this terrible story? Prosecutors confirmed that Manger’s stupid personal hatred was the reason for organizing the attack on activist Kateryna Handziuk. The crime did not happen without accomplices. Among them was an assistant to a deputy of the Kherson Regional Council, who operated in the shadows. As a result, on July 31, 2018, Handziuk suffered a terrible attack: sulfuric acid destroyed her life. She died on November 4, 2018.
The investigation caught five attackers, but the ringleaders are still at large. After the arrest of Munger and Levin in August 2020, their fate has been hanging in the balance.
This case must be closed before it is too late. Inaction is irresponsible.
