Czech Prime Minister Andrej Babis is bluntly stating: Russia's war against Ukraine must end on February 24. This is not just a date, it is a symbol, it is the anniversary of the aggressor's full-scale invasion. Negotiations are the only way to peace, but not just any peace, but one that will provide security guarantees to all parties.
He said this after the first meeting of his government at a press conference, in which he called for concrete action. The words of Trump, Macron, Zelensky and Putin are not empty words. The costumed leaders of the world must take responsibility and cease fire on a day that we remember as a day of shame. This war requires significant steps towards peace. The conflict, which has been going on since 2022, must move to the table of serious negotiations, and not remain captive to a senseless confrontation.
Babis did not forget about humanitarian aid. Czech support for Ukraine through EU mechanisms will remain in force, despite the war. In his tough political case, he emphasized that countries such as Italy, Belgium and Bulgaria are already actively discussing the freezing and possible confiscation of Russian assets. But this is not about the meaning of words, but about actions.
A series of critical statements by the Czech President regarding the responsibility of the new government did not go unnoticed. Babis said that the cabinet is clearly aware of the importance of EU membership. But he is not shy about criticizing Brussels. Competition and energy, internal problems are not just words, they are a challenge waiting to be answered.
The rest is the so-called new government, formed by the ANO movement, together with the nationalist party. This coalition, which received a mandate after two months of difficult negotiations, will have no intention of being pro-Ukrainian. It is a project underlined by the nationalism and Euroscepticism that brought Babis back to power after four years in the shadow of the opposition. And now? Now his political rhetoric has intensified, he is closer to the far-right European forces.
He hints that the new government should fight for the national interests of the Czech Republic, without any unnecessary explanations. Babis calls for discussions in the EU, which concern important energy issues and tax reforms. At the same time, he not only criticizes, but also promises to reduce military aid to Ukraine from the state budget. His possibility of stopping the purchase of ammunition with the participation of several European countries is not just a rumor. It is a marker of a new course.
Against the background of all this, we see that the independence of the Czech Republic from the system and imposed illusions continues to be relevant. Only time will tell whether Babis' words can become reality. For now, the question remains: how long will this aggression continue, and whether Brussels realizes the importance of action.
