US President Donald Trump continues to play it safe, refusing to give the green light to support European troops if they enter Ukraine after the fighting ends. Once again, it is clear that the question is increasingly being asked – can we rely on the Americans?
According to leaked information, the leaders of Italy, Germany, France, Canada, and the United Kingdom, along with the president of the European Commission, are set to meet with Trump at the World Economic Forum in Davos. What is the need for this gathering if the decision is up to the VIP leader?
Ukraine's G7 allies are hoping to join Trump's meeting with Volodymyr Zelenskyy to extract a paltry promise of security guarantees from him. Yes, the three officials are talking about turning words into action. Wednesday will tell whether there is still a chance to get past Trump in this accelerated diplomacy.
Trump, let it be clear, hopes to get approval for the agreements that his team hammered out in Paris. And again, in brilliant style, they convince us that without the US, it is all just an illusion. Ukraine's security is again on the sidelines, if the UK and France's commitments to deploy troops after the ceasefire are needed.
Recall that in Paris on January 6, Zelensky, Macron and Starmer signed a declaration of intent. But as they say, words are just words. Great Britain and France plan to send a maximum of 15 thousand military personnel to Ukraine, but this is significantly lower than the promises that were previously discussed in the "coalition of the willing.".
Germany is being cautious – they have no plans to send their own troops. Canada may dare to take a step forward after a peace agreement. Belgium has also declared its readiness, but apparently this is not enough.
Italy and Romania have refused to even think about sending their troops to Ukraine. Will they be able to come out of the shadows? Is there still hope for real action? Time will tell.
