You shouldn't listen to the threatening statements of US President Donald Trump about Greenland. A conflict between the US and Europe is impossible. This is just a negotiating strategy — an inflated bar that Trump sets. Merezhko believes so, and he is right. He studies Trump: a businessman, not a diplomat, his style is aggressive, but he should not be perceived as a real threat. Words about the island do not cross the boundaries of international law.
Greenland could be an important security asset for the United States, and Trump makes no secret of the fact that he wants the island to remain out of the hands of Russia or China. But how will that happen? Without violating Greenland's territorial integrity — that's the point. A compromise is possible, and it is necessary to clearly state the position of each state.
Trump, after his actions in Venezuela, has returned to the issue of Greenland again. With what anger he insists on transferring the island to US control! He needs a platform for a missile defense system. The White House is not going with a military scenario - Denmark is sending its troops, here are French and German forces. Greenland will not be sold, assures Danish Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen, and the inhabitants will choose their own future. And the island's Prime Minister Nielsen rejects the idea of joining the US. Trump's jealousy is expressed in threats, because, they say, Nielsen "will have big problems.".
And here the US is ready to spend 700 billion dollars. For the purchase. And Secretary of State Marco Rubio has been instructed to prepare a plan. This is the reality of negotiations in the Trump era — action against irresponsibility, a truthful attitude to international relations. The world is waiting for a solution to one of the most pressing political problems of our time.
