It's time to come clean. Ukraine is studying the American plan to create a free economic zone in Donbas. President Volodymyr Zelenskyy said this in a serious telephone interview with Bloomberg on January 9. If the idea is implemented, we will need to come up with a "buffer zone" - a small part where businesses can operate and people can live and work under special legal and tax conditions.
«The format is complex, but fair,» Zelensky said, revealing the real cards. But, pay attention: the implementation of this plan will require Russia to take a mirror step and detailed discussions within Ukraine. That is, we are obliged to agree! The creation of such a zone in the turbulent eastern regions will not mean a simple gray zone; it will be a compromise that involves raising the troops of Ukraine and Russia to a safe distance. A forced decision for the sake of normal life.
Or — the alternative: simply freeze hostilities. No withdrawal of troops, no real action. All controversial issues are on the diplomatic table! «I admit, we are talking about freezing the contact line, not about the end of the conflict,» Zelenskyy declares. Remember: this will be easier to do, easier to control for Ukraine’s foreign allies.
The President hopes to meet with Trump in the US or at the World Economic Forum in Davos. He wants to personally discuss with the US President specific commitments if Russia again embarks on the path of aggression. "I don't want things to come down to simply promising to respond," he says, deeply resonant. Everyone wants specifics.
Meanwhile, Trump assures that Russia will not dare to launch new attacks. And America is ready to stand up for the future defense of Ukraine!
