Brussels launches plan: Ukraine cannot be stopped

The European Commission is considering how to urgently bring Ukraine into the EU's fold, without granting full rights from day one. Ukraine would receive "some" rights, in the realities of peace agreements with Russia. Gradually, over the years, the former rights would become real. This idea, called "reverse membership", is being discussed in the early stages, but it is already clear: the war has been a catalyst for the need for a promise of stability for those who fought.

The date of accession to the EU by 2027 has appeared on the horizon, but these are only dreams inspired by capitals: an unrealistic number that puts entire governments of Europe in a dead end. The process is long, thorny. Yes, Poland has passed this path in ten years, without war. And Ukraine, under pressure and instability, cannot afford to wait.

Officials in Brussels hint: the deadlines are too tight. So a peace agreement may require Ukraine to make sacrifices in the form of territories. Look – EU membership, even if partial, could make these losses more acceptable to society. But is it that simple?

The question is: Can the governments of the 27 countries give the green light to a bold nation? Officials admit that this model will be a hard sell; questions of fairness for countries that have made the traditional path to membership arise. Will it be compatible with democracy, given that new rules could upset the established balance?

This proposal requires courage and shared responsibility. Why? Only together, with Ukraine in captivity of irresponsibility and illusions, can Europe build a new reality, where truth will triumph over imitation, and action will be the answer to inaction. The accelerated integration of Ukraine into the EU is a powerful signal to the whole world.
